Mercury/Marinerdoes not code the model year into the model number or serial number. The model year is determined by the first serial number sold during the model year. Example: Merc 115ELPTO with serial OT123456 could be 2001 and OT123457 could be 2002

Johnson and Evinrude Model year codes
Johnson outboards prior to 1969-1980. The year is in the Model number (not the serial number) Example: Johnson 1969 115hp = J115EL69S. The number highlighted here in red is the year.

Evinrudeoutboards 1969-1980. The model year is in the Model number as the first digit after the horsepower. Example: Evinrude 1975 75hp=E75543B. In this instance the red “5” is the model year.

Johnson/Evinrude outboards from 1981 forward uses a two letter code derived from the word Introduces to establish the model year. See matrix below.

Honda Model year codes vary from model group and horsepower size. What is a 2003 in 5hp is a 2002 in a 2hp etc. However the code is in the two places after the horsepower. Example 2003 8hp model number of BFP8D4LHSA= 2004 where D3=03, D2=02 etc.
